Job Summary
Ursa Space Systems seeks a skilled Technical Writer to develop comprehensive documentation for complex codebases encompassing advanced geospatial analytics algorithms, geospatial data ingestion pipelines, and AI/ML agent systems. The ideal candidate will have experience with documentation frameworks such as Read the Docs, Sphinx, MkDocs, or similar. Proficiency in building documentation automation systems, and the ability to prepare content suitable for training AI Large Language Models (LLMs).
This position will report directly to the Director of Rapid Development and Testing.
Job Responsibilities
- Collaborate with software developers, data scientists, and AI/ML engineers to gather and articulate technical information.
- Develop clear, concise, and comprehensive documentation for complex scientific codebases, including user manuals, API references, and system overviews.
- Utilize documentation frameworks like Read the Docs and Sphinx to create and maintain structured and accessible documentation.
- Implement and manage documentation automation systems to streamline content updates and ensure consistency.
- Prepare documentation in formats optimized for training AI LLMs, ensuring clarity and relevance for machine learning applications.
- Ensure all documentation adheres to industry standards and guidelines.
- Continuously update and revise documentation to reflect system enhancements and new features.
- All other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Technical Writing, Computer Science, Data Science, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in technical writing, preferably within scientific computing, geospatial data, or AI/ML domains.
- Proficiency with documentation frameworks such as Read the Docs and Sphinx.
- Experience in building and managing documentation automation systems.
- Familiarity with preparing documentation for AI LLM training purposes.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a keen attention to detail.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Preferred Skills
- Experience with version control systems like Git.
- Familiarity with programming languages commonly used in scientific computing, such as Python or R.
- Understanding of geospatial data formats and processing techniques.
- Knowledge of AI/ML concepts and their applications in scientific research.
Location
- Remote or Hybrid - in Ithaca, NY office
Salary Range
- $60,000 - $90,000 base salary, depending on skills and experience
